Spain is already in. Their opponent will be either England or Argentina. And the 2026 World Cup final is set for Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. Eastern, which means 8 p.m. in the UK. If you’re Stateside, that’s a standard Sunday afternoon window — perfect for a backyard watch party or a crowded sports bar.

La Roja punched their ticket with a 2-0 win over France in Arlington, Texas. It wasn’t flashy but it was clinical, and now they wait on the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between England and Argentina. The losers of that game head to Miami for the third-place match against France on Saturday.

Argentina has history on its mind. Only two nations have ever won back-to-back World Cups: Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Messi’s squad is trying to become the third. That’s the kind of legacy stuff that makes a final feel bigger than just 90 minutes of soccer.

The Venue and What’s at Stake

MetLife Stadium holds about 82,500 people normally, though FIFA dropped that to 80,663 for the tournament. It’s the shared home of the Giants and Jets, and it’s already hosted seven World Cup matches. Some highlights: England’s 2-0 group-stage win over Panama, Norway’s stunning last-16 upset of Brazil, and France grinding out a win against Sweden. Ecuador fans still talk about their 2-1 group-stage win over Germany here.

FIFA’s sponsorship rules mean the stadium is officially called New York/New Jersey Stadium during the tournament. Nobody actually calls it that in conversation, but the contract says what it says.

Half-Time Show Is Going Big

The U.S. is bringing a Super Bowl-style halftime to the World Cup final. It’ll run about 11 minutes. Justin Bieber was recently added to a lineup that already included Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel, and the PS22 Chorus with a Coldplay assist. Chris Martin is running the show, and proceeds go to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.

Before kickoff, there’s a closing ceremony. Tom Cruise is involved, along with Laura Pausini, Nicole Scherzinger, Robbie Williams, and IShowSpeed — which gives you some idea of the range they’re aiming for. Jennifer Hudson will sing the national anthem. That’s standard pregame stuff but with a bigger spotlight.

This is the first World Cup final held in the United States since 1994, and the first ever at a stadium that was built primarily for American football. The turf will be swapped out, the lines will be painted, and for one Sunday in July, it’ll be the center of the soccer world.
