Manchester United Snags a 19-Year-Old Goalkeeper. His Dad Might Be More Famous.

Manchester United added a fourth signing to their summer haul on Monday, but this one didn’t come with the fanfare of a big-money midfield splash. The club officially confirmed the arrival of Kit Margetson, a 19-year-old goalkeeper from Swansea City. And yes, the last name should ring a bell.

Margetson is the son of Martyn Margetson, the former England and Swansea goalkeeper who now works as the national team’s goalkeeping coach for Wales. The younger Margetson spent last season on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier, where he piled up 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances and helped the Welsh side qualify for the Europa League. Not bad for a teenager’s first taste of senior football.

A Compensation Deal, Not a Transfer Fee

United didn’t pay a transfer fee. Because Margetson was out of contract at Swansea, the two clubs agreed on a compensation package — standard practice when a player under 24 moves after leaving an academy. Swansea will get some payment for developing him since he’d been with the club since he was 15 years old.

Margetson also made his Wales Under-21 debut back in March against Belarus. He’s the second Welsh goalkeeper United have brought in this summer, following Karl Darlow on a free transfer after Darlow left Leeds.

The Kone Situation Is Heating Up

While the Margetson deal is done and dusted, United haven’t stopped shopping. The club is still hunting for a third midfield signing after landing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans earlier this window. According to the Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, they’ve already agreed on personal terms with Roma’s Manu Kone — the same Kone who turned heads at the World Cup with France.

Those same reports say United is ready to submit an offer worth around €50 million (£42.7 million) for Kone. But they aren’t alone in the race. Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, and Saudi club Al-Ahli are all reportedly in the mix. United hasn’t commented on any of that speculation.

For now, the club’s official line is all about the kid from Swansea. “Everyone at United would like to welcome Kit to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future,” the statement read. Swansea’s farewell was gracious enough too. “Everyone at Swansea City wishes Kit every success during his time at Old Trafford.”

Margetson will likely start with the reserves or go out on loan again. United isn’t exactly thin in goal with Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir, and Darlow already on the books. But young keepers are a long game, and the club clearly sees something in this one.
