Manchester United Pulls Off Double Brazilian Midfield Raid with Andrey Santos Deal

Manchester United has agreed to buy Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million plus £2 million in achievable add-ons, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. Chelsea will also keep a 10 percent sell-on clause on the 22-year-old Brazilian.

The deal comes just hours after United finalized a separate agreement with Atalanta for another Brazilian midfielder, Ederson. So INEOS is basically rebuilding the middle of the pitch in one day with two guys from the same country.

Santos wanted out of Chelsea for regular minutes

Santos has already agreed to personal terms with United. Chelsea gave him permission to travel and complete the transfer. The move makes sense for everyone involved.

At Stamford Bridge, Santos was stuck behind a midfield that just got more crowded when Moises Caicedo signed a contract extension through 2033. There wasn’t a clear path to regular starts. And Santos made it known he wants to play every week, not sit on a bench.

He spent the 2024-25 season on loan at RC Strasbourg, where he was genuinely productive. That stint in Ligue 1 convinced United’s scouting staff he can handle the physical side of Premier League football. The kid can pass through lines, he can press, and he doesn’t disappear in big moments.

United’s midfield looks completely different now

Pairing Santos with Ederson gives United two midfielders who are comfortable playing box-to-box but also have enough defensive bite to protect a back four. It’s a deliberate shift away from the static, one-paced midfield United has rolled out for years.

Santos is 22. Ederson is 25. So this isn’t a short-term patch. United is betting its midfield spine is set for the next half-decade.

Will it work? Santos looked good at Strasbourg but that’s a different level of pressure. Old Trafford is not Strasbourg. But the raw tools are there. Chelsea didn’t want to let him go permanently — they tried, but Santos pushed for the move and United paid the asking price.

More details on the contract length and official medical are expected in the next 48 hours. But the framework is done. United gets its Brazilian. Chelsea gets cash and a sell-on clause. And Santos finally gets the starting job he’s been chasing.
