Manchester United is about to sign a 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder named Ederson for £35 million. The deal is all but done. Medical this week, announcement soon after. And somewhere in the background, another Brazilian midfielder who plays for Chelsea is watching this happen and probably wondering what the hell he has to do.
Andrey Santos is 22. He has spent two years being patient at Stamford Bridge, sitting behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. He has made 47 appearances for Chelsea and another 45 on loan at Strasbourg. And according to multiple people inside Old Trafford who have spoken with the club’s recruitment staff, United has been tracking him for over a year. They wanted him in the Alejandro Garnacho deal last summer. Chelsea said no.
Now Chelsea might say yes. Santos is ready to leave. He does not want to be a rotation piece anymore. The asking price is around £50 million. That is about £11 million more than what United is paying for Ederson. But when you spread it over five years instead of four, the annual cost is basically the same. Ten million a year either way.
The people who have watched both players closely will tell you the on-ball difference is not close. Santos can pass through lines. He can turn under pressure. He can hit a forward in stride from 40 yards. Ederson plays it safe. His completion numbers look great because he almost never tries anything risky. That is a red flag, not a strength. Ugarte had the same numbers at Sporting. Look how that has gone.
And the goal contributions tell a story too. Ederson has 36 career goals and assists in 305 games. Santos has 43 in 167. Almost half the games, better output. He has also played in the Premier League and Ligue 1. Ederson has played in Serie A. Ask Zirkzee how that transition went.
The worry inside United’s fanbase is not that Ederson is bad. He is a good player. Strong in duels, good engine, can play the 6 or the 8. The worry is that Santos is clearly better and United is about to let him go to someone else because they are too far down the road with Atalanta to turn around. The club has a great relationship with Atalanta. Carrick approved Ederson. The recruitment team is aligned. Walking away now would burn a bridge.
But football is a brutal business. Ratcliffe built his reputation on being ruthless in petrochemicals. This is the same logic. Go get the better asset. Santos is the better asset.
