Manchester United’s summer shopping list for midfield help is starting to look more like a real plan instead of a wish list. Sky Sports is reporting that Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott are both sitting near the top of what the club is targeting. Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi is also on the radar, and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville remains the frontrunner for that left-wing spot they’ve been trying to fill for what feels like forever.
This whole search got more urgent after United missed out on Mateus Fernandes. The Times reported that Fernandes ended up at Tottenham instead, and that loss stung a little more because it was a deal United thought they had a real shot at. Now the front office has to pivot, and the options are interesting in very different ways.
Why Tchouameni Makes Sense as the Big Swing
Tchouameni is 26, has Champions League experience from his time in Madrid and brings a kind of physical authority United’s midfield has been missing since Michael Carrick was still playing. He reads the game well, he’s strong in the tackle and he’s not afraid to dictate tempo. If United want to send a message that they’re serious about competing with the top of the table, Tchouameni is the kind of signing that does that.
The problem is Real Madrid doesn’t let players like that leave cheap. They’d want a substantial fee, and they’re not exactly hurting for leverage. United would have to pay up or walk away.
Alex Scott Represents the Longer View
Scott is a different kind of bet. He’s younger, already proven he can handle Premier League minutes at Bournemouth and he’s comfortable carrying the ball through pressure. United have been tracking him for a while, and his technical ability is no secret around the league. He’s not going to walk in and immediately boss a midfield the way Tchouameni might, but he fits a rebuild that’s thinking beyond next season.
Bournemouth knows what they’ve got. They’ve been pushing to extend his contract and they’re not eager to sell. Any deal there would take real negotiation.
What United Should Actually Do
The Fernandes miss was frustrating but it shouldn’t force panic spending. United has chased too many midfielders in recent years without a coherent plan, and that’s a big reason they’re still sorting this out year after year. The ideal scenario would be landing one established guy and one younger guy, because this squad needs both immediate control and depth for the future.
Tchouameni gives you power and experience now. Scott gives you energy and upside later. If Carrick wants balance right away, Tchouameni is the stronger fit. If the club is thinking value and long-term growth, Scott might be the smarter investment. They’ve got the list. Now they need to pick a lane.
