Real Madrid Locks Down Tchouameni on Five-Year Deal, Manchester United Left Scrambling

Aurelien Tchouameni isn’t going anywhere. The French midfielder has agreed to a new five-year contract with Real Madrid, effectively killing any chance Manchester United had of prying him away this summer.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, all terms are finalized and an official announcement is expected within days. That’s a significant pivot for a player who had been heavily linked with a Premier League exit just a few months ago. Under new manager Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid is undergoing a rebuild, and Tchouameni was reportedly one of the names on the table for potential sale. But Mourinho has since changed course. He wants to build his midfield around Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham, and Federico Valverde. That trio is young, athletic, and versatile — exactly the kind of core Mourinho has leaned on in the past.

Why This Hurts United

For Manchester United, this is the third midfield target to slip through their fingers this window. They already missed out on Elliot Anderson, who signed with Manchester City, and Mateus Fernandes, who joined Tottenham. Each of those players fit the profile Michael Carrick is looking for: technical, mobile, and capable of playing multiple roles in midfield. Tchouameni was arguably the biggest prize of the three.

But United hasn’t been sitting still. They’ve agreed on a fee with Chelsea for Andrey Santos — an initial £48 million, plus £2 million in add-ons. The Brazilian international has only eight senior caps but loads of potential. Santos requested the move after struggling to find consistent minutes at Stamford Bridge. At 21, he’s still raw but fits the long-term vision.

They’ve also lined up a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, expected to cost around £35 million. That’s a more proven option, a box-to-box midfielder who doesn’t mind doing the dirty work. United has also been monitoring Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Fulham’s Sander Berge, though neither would be a splashy signing.

What Tchouameni’s Extension Means for Real Madrid

Keeping Tchouameni gives Mourinho some serious flexibility. At 26, the Frenchman is entering his prime. He’s not the flashiest midfielder on the ball, but he reads the game well and breaks up play as well as anyone in La Liga. Pairing him with Bellingham — who is more of a goal-scoring threat from deep — and Valverde’s relentless energy gives Madrid a midfield that can dominate possession and counter quickly.

The extension also sends a message. After a season where Madrid looked disjointed at times, Mourinho is clearly prioritizing continuity over a full-scale tear-down. Tchouameni’s contract was set to expire in 2028, but the new deal locks him in through 2031, per Romano. That’s a long-term commitment from both sides.

For United fans, it’s another reminder that landing elite talent isn’t easy, even with money to spend. Carrick’s rebuild isn’t dead — far from it — but the names they’re targeting now aren’t the household ones they were chasing a month ago.
