Leeds United Risk Losing Karl Darlow for Free as Manchester United Push for Deal

Manchester United are in active talks with Karl Darlow’s representatives. That’s not just rumor mill noise. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking with The United Stand, the club wants the veteran goalkeeper as a low-cost, homegrown backup. They need someone who can support or push Senne Lammens, especially if Altay Bayindir gets moved out. Sam Johnstone is also on the list, but Darlow brings a specific market advantage: he’s about to be available for nothing.

The 35-year-old Wales international’s contract at Elland Road expires June 30. That deadline gives Darlow serious leverage. Free transfers are gold for top clubs working tight budgets. And European football? That’s a strong lure for a seasoned pro. It leaves Leeds in a genuinely awkward spot.

Darlow had a solid season under Daniel Farke. He even held the starting job for a big chunk of the campaign. Five clean sheets in 22 appearances. That form caught Manchester United’s attention. Now Leeds has a decision to make, and the clock is ticking.

Why Farke Can’t Afford to Lose Him

Letting a reliable, calming presence walk to a direct rival for zero compensation is just bad business. Darlow proved his value last season by displacing Lucas Perri in net. Finding an equivalent domestic backup on reasonable wages is genuinely difficult right now. If he leaves, Leeds wastes time and money fixing a secondary position when the starting lineup needs real investment.

Farke needs two starting-caliber options for the schedule congestion ahead. A modest pay raise keeps squad harmony intact. The board has to show some ambition here. Letting Darlow slip away signals a lack of intent to the entire locker room.

The Elland Road hierarchy should put a competitive two-year extension on the table immediately. Replacing an established figure like Darlow costs millions in the transfer market. Money that should go elsewhere. Stability breeds success. And right now, Leeds needs stability more than ever.

The clock runs out June 30. The Red Devils are circling. Farke has to act fast.
