Manchester United’s search for a veteran backup goalkeeper might be hitting a wall. According to The Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler, Karl Darlow looks more likely to sign a new two-year deal at Leeds than to move to Old Trafford this summer.
That’s a twist for United. They’ve been eyeing the 35-year-old as a reliable second option behind Senne Lammens, their breakout starter from last season. Darlow stepped in for Leeds late in the year and helped keep them in the Premier League — five clean sheets in 22 appearances. He’s experienced, he’s available on a free, and he understood the role.
But now it sounds like he’s staying put at Elland Road.
What’s behind United’s need for a keeper
The goalkeeper situation at United is shifting fast. Senne Lammens, who joined from Royal Antwerp last summer, had a dream first season in England. He locked down the starting job, helped United finish third, and got them back into the Champions League. He even won the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season award.
Meanwhile, Andre Onana spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor. He wants to come back and fight for his spot, but it doesn’t sound like that’s in the cards. Trabzonspor wants to keep him permanently, though nothing’s finalized yet.
Altay Bayindir is likely gone too. Clubs in Turkey — Besiktas and Fenerbahce — are interested, and Bayindir wants regular minutes. So United could be losing two keepers and promoting from within.
Radek Vitek just had a monster loan season at Bristol City in the Championship. He won their Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, and Young Player of the Year awards. United values him at around £10 million and is open to selling him. That would count as pure profit on the books.
If Vitek also leaves, United’s goalkeeping depth gets thin fast. That’s why Darlow made sense as a low-cost, experienced stopgap. He’s out of contract, knows the league, and could push Lammens while providing cover.
Other names in the mix
United hasn’t put all its eggs in Darlow’s basket. Sam Johnstone, the Wolves and England keeper who started his career at the club, is reportedly being discussed as another option. And Tom Heaton just signed a contract extension, so he’s still around to provide veteran presence in the room.
But if Darlow stays at Leeds — and right now that looks like the most likely outcome — United will have to pivot fast. The transfer window is open, and they need to figure out who’s going to hold the clipboard behind Lammens next season.
Leeds gets to keep a guy who helped save their Premier League status. United has to find Plan B.
