LeBron’s Silence Gives Warriors a Window for Anthony Davis but the Cost Is Brutal

The Golden State Warriors want LeBron James. That’s not a secret anymore. LeBron knows it, the league knows it, and everybody with a social media account has seen the speculation. But here’s the problem: James has gone quiet. He’s not meeting with teams, not giving interviews, not dropping hints. He’s let his agent Rich Paul handle the talking. And that silence has created a weird pause where the Warriors are now trying to figure out if they can pull off something bigger than just signing a 41-year-old free agent.

They’re looking at Anthony Davis.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Warriors have started talking to the Washington Wizards about a trade for Davis. The idea is clear: bring in AD to pair with LeBron, recreate some of that Lakers magic, and make the whole thing a package deal. But the Wizards know they’re holding a card Golden State wants, and they’re asking for a lot.

Charania laid out the asking price on an appearance with Stephen A. Smith. The Wizards want Jimmy Butler, multiple first-round picks, multiple second-round picks, and multiple pick swaps. That’s not a negotiable wishlist. That’s the floor.

Jimmy Butler. A pile of draft capital. And a 33-year-old big man who has missed significant time in almost every season since 2020. The Warriors have to ask themselves: is that worth it to try to convince LeBron to sign?

Davis turns 34 next season. He’s still a dominant defensive presence when healthy, but “when healthy” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The Wizards are basically daring the Warriors to overpay for the chance to reunite him with LeBron. And Golden State has to decide if they want to gut their future for a short window with an aging superstar duo.

LeBron has talked publicly about how much he enjoys playing with Stephen Curry. The two have become close over the years, and that relationship might be a bigger draw than the chance to play with Davis again. But Curry and LeBron together would be a nightmare for the rest of the league — if they can get the supporting cast right.

There’s also the odds. A betting market on Kalshi, shared by Full Court Pass on X, gives the Warriors just a 16 percent chance to land LeBron. The Cavaliers lead at 52 percent, with the 76ers at 15. The Heat and Knicks are also in the mix.

So the Warriors are basically sitting in a car with the engine running, waiting for LeBron to make a move, while the Wizards hold up a sign that says “pay us everything.” It’s a risky play. But Golden State has never been shy about swinging for the fences.
