Max Muncy is back at the All-Star Game for the first time since 2021. The Dodgers infielder made the NL roster and headed to Philly alongside Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Andy Pages, Justin Wrobleski, and manager Dave Roberts. But even with the honor of being selected, Muncy isn’t afraid to point out what drains him most about the midsummer classic.
He went on The Foul Territory podcast and got straight to the point. When asked what he’d change if he ran the event, Muncy didn’t hesitate.
“If there’s any way to make it less exhausting, that’d be what I would change. I would add an extra day.”
That’s it. One more day to breathe.
Muncy pulled back the curtain on something fans don’t always see: the travel logistics. Some All-Stars have to fly to the host city right before the game. Others show up late for media obligations because of scheduling conflicts. And once everyone gets there, the whole thing feels rushed. Chemistry between teammates you’ve never played with? That’s built in a few hours, not days.
He also floated the idea of letting more All-Stars just hang out and watch the Home Run Derby. Right now, it’s mostly a side event for the guys who aren’t competing. But Muncy seems to think the whole experience could use some breathing room.
This is Muncy’s second All-Star appearance. He last made it in 2021, a year where he racked up a career-high 124 hits and mashed 36 homers. He matched that home run total again in 2023. This season, he’s sitting on 76 hits and 17 dingers for LA, along with 40 RBIs. Not bad for a guy who’s been fighting through some nagging stuff here and there.
Muncy isn’t the only one who’s pointed out the mid-summer grind. Players have griped for years about how the break barely feels like a break. Between travel, media scrums, fan events, and the actual game, the whole thing can wear you out. Muncy’s suggestion to add a day isn’t revolutionary. But hearing it from a guy who’s actually in the middle of it? That carries weight.
The All-Star Game itself is Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. Muncy will be in the lineup. He’ll shake hands, take BP, and probably smile for a hundred cameras. But deep down, he’s thinking about that extra day off.
