Karl Darlow Turned Down Leeds’ Offer. Now He’s Heading to Manchester United.

Leeds United officially said goodbye to Karl Darlow this week, and the move has a little more spice to it than your average expiring contract. The 35-year-old goalkeeper is headed to Manchester United after turning down a new deal from the Championship club. And here’s the thing — Leeds actually offered him terms to stay.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Darlow’s issue wasn’t money or years. It was playing time. The proposal from Leeds didn’t guarantee him the starting spot, and at his age, he wasn’t interested in being a backup again. So he took his chances somewhere else.

From Championship Glory to Premier League Backup

Darlow joined Leeds ahead of the 2023/24 season under Daniel Farke and debuted in a League Cup win over Shrewsbury Town. Nothing flashy. But then came the following season, when he started the final seven matches of the Championship campaign. Leeds won six of those, clinched the second-tier title at Plymouth Argyle on the final day, and he was suddenly the guy.

That’s also when his international career took off. He made his debut for Wales — following his grandfather’s footsteps — and now has 15 caps as their number one. Not bad for a journeyman keeper who started the season in the English second division.

Back in the Premier League last season, Darlow played 22 times. One of those was an April outing against Wolverhampton where he denied Ladislav Krejci with a stop that won Save of the Month. He leaves Leeds with 38 total appearances, a Championship title on his résumé, and a hand in keeping them up last year. The club called him an exemplary professional who spent real time with the Leeds United Foundation. That part mattered.

Leeds Has a Goalkeeper Problem Right Now

The timing here is not ideal for Leeds. Illan Meslier already left for Arsenal earlier this summer. Now Darlow’s gone too. That leaves Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns as the only senior keepers on the roster. Perri has been linked with Torino himself, which would be a real problem. Leeds are known to be interested in James Trafford and Zion Suzuki, but nothing’s done yet.

So Farke’s squad is thin in goal heading into preseason. They’ll need to move fast. For Darlow, he walks into a backup role at Old Trafford behind their first-choice keeper. It’s not the glamour gig, but it’s a Premier League paycheck and a chance to stay in the mix. For a guy who wasn’t getting the No. 1 guarantee he wanted, it’s something.
