Manchester United is running out of time on Angelo Stiller. Like, today-level running out of time.
The 25-year-old Stuttgart midfielder has a release clause that expires at midnight on July 15. That means a £31 million fee — still active right now — vanishes when the clock hits 12. After that, Stuttgart can set whatever price they want. And they almost certainly will.
According to German outlet Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), the clause ends tonight. Stuttgart technically has the option to buy it out for £3 million but hasn’t done it yet. So the window is still open. Barely.
Why United needs him now
Stiller has quietly become one of the Bundesliga’s best deep-lying playmakers since joining Stuttgart in 2023. He’s the kind of midfielder who controls tempo, sprays passes from the back, and rarely gives the ball away. Germany caps followed. So did interest from Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Juventus.
At Old Trafford, both sporting director Jason Wilcox and recruitment specialist Christopher Vivell are fans. United already brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa this summer. That’s two midfielders. But Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury — expected to cost him most if not all of next season — has the club looking for a third.
Stiller is that third option. Or he could be, if they act fast.
The math on a deal
At £31 million, Stiller is relatively cheap compared to other targets. Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha is reportedly valued north of £100 million. That’s a huge gap. And Stiller’s resale value is strong — if he struggles in the Premier League, United could likely flip him next summer for a profit.
But there’s a complication. The Tielemans signing might have made Stiller less of a priority. Both players have similar profiles. United is reportedly looking for a marquee No. 6 to replace Casemiro, not another deep-lying playmaker who overlaps with what they already have.
Still, the club sent scouts to watch Stiller multiple times last season, per Sport Bild. The interest is real. The question is whether they see him as the final piece or just a good deal that doesn’t quite fit.
Stuttgart finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season, securing Champions League football on the final day. Stiller was their engine — described internally as ‘Mr Indispensable.’ He wants to test himself at the highest level. He’s got the release clause. The clock is ticking.
United has hours to decide. After that, the price goes up. Way up.
