Jesse Eisenberg wants to play Gregg Popovich. Not in a pickup game. In a movie.
The 42-year-old actor, who has built a career playing tense, fast-talking characters, told The Wrap that his dream biopic role would be the longtime San Antonio Spurs coach turned team president. And he really means it.
“I just find him to be the most fascinating person on the planet,” Eisenberg said. “Here’s this tough coach who cries sometimes and talks about the plight of America, and yet he’s also this terrifying figure who can be so mean to journalists. People like that are fascinating because, on the one hand, they’re known to be very nasty, and on the other hand they’re these bleeding hearts.”
Popovich spent 29 seasons as the Spurs head coach from 1996 through 2025, winning five NBA championships along the way. He was the longest-tenured active coach in the league when he stepped down and moved into a front office role as president of basketball operations. His career stretches across eras — the David Robinson transition, the Tim Duncan dynasty, the Kawhi Leonard drama, and the rebuild after.
Eisenberg isn’t exactly the first name that comes to mind for a basketball coach. He admitted as much.
“I just think I would be very low on the list to be cast as a basketball coach,” he said.
That’s probably true. But Popovich isn’t just a basketball coach. He’s a guy who has given politically charged press conferences, once called out the NBA for its handling of social issues, and somehow managed to be both beloved by his players and feared by reporters covering the team. The range is unusual. The kind of role a serious actor might actually want to sink into.
Eisenberg is currently promoting his upcoming film The Debut. He didn’t say whether he’s had any conversations with Popovich or the Spurs organization about the idea. The team has not commented on his remarks.
Whether or not Hollywood ever casts Eisenberg as Popovich, the fact that an Oscar-nominated actor looks at a basketball coach and sees his dream role tells you something about the kind of figure Popovich has become. He was already one of the winningest coaches in NBA history. Now he’s apparently the subject of an actor’s casting wish list too.
