Jalen Brunson Had Surgery After Winning the Title. That Only Makes Him More Legendary.

Jalen Brunson won’t have to buy a drink in New York for the rest of his life. That was already true after he led the Knicks to their first NBA title in 53 years. But here’s the thing about legends. They tend to grow even after the confetti gets swept up.

Weeks after the Knicks knocked off Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals, Brunson quietly went in for surgery on his left wrist. The injury had been nagging him apparently since the playoffs. He never said a word about it during the run.

ESPN’s Monica McNutt heard the news and basically said, yep, that tracks perfectly.

“Absolutely, it certainly does,” McNutt said when asked if the surgery makes Brunson’s title run even more impressive. “But Jalen Brunson is the type of player, and he comes from the stock that if he’s on the floor, he’s going to give it his best. He’s not going to make any excuses, and so finding out in hindsight that there was an injury that would require surgery only adds to his lore and his status as the king of New York.”

There were moments during the postseason where Brunson went down and headed to the locker room. He always came back. Every single time. Nobody outside the team knew it was something that would eventually land him in a doctor’s office.

“He just kept playing,” McNutt added. “He’s a guy that will never make an excuse.”

What the Numbers Actually Look Like

Through 19 playoff games, Brunson averaged 28.4 points on 46.5 percent shooting. He also dished out 6.1 assists per game. Those are MVP-caliber numbers for a guy who apparently couldn’t fully grip the ball on one side.

The Knicks have not confirmed the exact nature of the surgery or whether Brunson will be limited during training camp. But knowing how this guy operates, he’ll probably show up early anyway.

This is the same player who signed a team-friendly extension, carried the franchise through multiple deep playoff runs, and finally broke through against a Spurs team that was supposed to rule the next decade. The wrist thing just adds another layer to the story.

New York has had its share of basketball heroes. Willis Reed. Patrick Ewing. Carmelo Anthony for a while. But Brunson is doing something different. He’s winning and he’s doing it while banged up and never complaining. The city notices that stuff.

McNutt put it simply. He’s the king of New York now. And apparently surgery after a championship is just another way to make the crown fit a little tighter.
