Jaylen Brown Thanks Boston, Takes Subtle Shot at Celtics Management After Shock Trade

Jaylen Brown stood on a stage in Boston on Tuesday, seven days after the Celtics shipped him to the 76ers in a deal that blindsided everyone, and he didn’t hold back entirely.

The 29-year-old wing, who will turn 30 in October, was in town for a community event with his Bridge Foundation when he addressed the kids and the city he called home for a decade. He thanked them. He also made it clear where he places the blame for the breakup.

“It’s okay, things happen,” Brown told the crowd. “But I love the city of Boston. I always have. I’ve been here for 10 years, a third of my life. I’ll be 30 in October, so Boston is home. And no management, or organization can take that away. I’m grateful to be here.”

The trade to Philadelphia, a division rival the Celtics have tangled with multiple times in the playoffs during Brown’s tenure, still feels surreal to him. According to reporter Daniel Donabedian, Brown said, “I don’t know. I’m probably gonna smile, laugh… It’s probably gonna feel weird. It’s still weird… My brain is like, ‘Philly? Of all places? Why would you do that?’”

The Numbers Behind the Move

Brown is coming off a career year. He averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.0 steal while shooting 47.7 percent from the field. That’s the kind of season that normally gets you a max extension and a parade, not a ticket to play for the enemy.

But front offices make cold calculations. The Celtics traded him while he still had peak value, apparently, and Philadelphia bet that pairing Brown with Joel Embiid can finally get them past the second round. Whether that works is a question for next spring. For now, Brown is processing the fact that he’ll be wearing a different uniform when he walks into TD Garden as a visitor.

Community Work Continues

Despite the trade, Brown showed up for the kids. The Bridge Foundation event Tuesday was part of a broader commitment he’s maintained throughout his time in Boston. He didn’t have to do it. He’s no longer a Celtic. But he did it anyway, and he made sure the message was about the people, not the business.

The 76ers have not officially introduced Brown yet, but that’s expected to happen later this week. Philadelphia fans are already buzzing about the backcourt of Tyrese Maxey and Brown, with Embiid inside. Boston fans? They’re trying to figure out how you trade a Finals MVP from two years ago and get better in the short term. No one has a clean answer yet.
