Bryce Harper Is Open to Moving Back to Right Field. Here’s What That Means for the Phillies.

Let’s get this out of the way right now: Bryce Harper is not getting traded. That’s not a thing. The Phillies are not shopping their franchise player. But that doesn’t mean the trade deadline won’t affect him.

According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Harper has told the team he’d be willing to slide back to right field if Philadelphia goes out and gets a first baseman before the deadline. That’s a pretty big deal for a guy who’s been playing first base this season and has done it well enough. But Bowden also says the Phillies are more likely to target an outfielder than a first baseman, and he specifically mentions Angels outfielder Jo Adell as a potential fit.

Harper, 33, is having another All-Star season. He’s hitting .270 with a .374 on-base percentage and a .520 slugging percentage, and he’s already got 20 home runs. Dude can hit. Wherever he plays, he produces. But the fact that he’s willing to move positions if needed gives the front office more flexibility. They don’t have to box themselves into finding a first baseman. They can go after the best bat available, whether that’s at first base or in the outfield.

The Phillies lineup has been carried by Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Brandon Marsh, but the offense overall has been inconsistent. They need another bat. That’s not a secret. The front office has made it clear they’re looking to add, and with the starting rotation and bullpen both looking a little thin, they’ve got multiple needs to address before the deadline.

What Harper’s Willingness Actually Means

If the Phillies land a first baseman, Harper goes back to right field. Simple. If they get an outfielder, Harper stays at first. Either way, he’s fine with it. That’s the kind of thing that makes a GM’s job easier. You’re not dealing with a guy who’s going to complain about switching positions midseason. Harper just wants to win.

The Phillies are currently preparing for their Tuesday night game against the Reds. But behind the scenes, the phones are ringing. They’re one of the teams that could be very active before the 2026 deadline, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if they end up making multiple moves.

Whether it’s Adell or someone else, the Phillies need an impact bat. And with Harper willing to adapt, they’ve got options. That’s a good problem to have.
