Matt Damon is about as Boston as they come. Born in Cambridge. Built his career on films like Good Will Hunting and The Departed. Bleeds green when it comes to the Celtics. So when he walked outside after the Knicks finally won a championship, he didn’t expect to be charmed.

But he was.

Damon told Lad Bible that being in New York after the Knicks clinched their first title in 53 years felt like stepping into a musical. Not a good musical, necessarily. More like one where everyone is about to break into some ridiculous song-and-dance number whether they can sing or not.

“When the Knicks won, I went out into the street with my kids, and it was like being in a musical,” Damon said. “The cops and the firefighters were hugging each other. It was unbelievable, and I was like, ‘Maybe the world should be like this.’ It felt like everyone was about to break into some horrible number.”

A celebration that crossed rival lines

For context: Damon has watched the Celtics win seven titles in his lifetime. He’s seen parades. He’s seen confetti. He knows what a real celebration looks like. So when a guy who roots for Boston is impressed by what Knicks fans did, that means something.

“I mean, even as a Celtics fan, it was impressive. It was a lot of joy,” he added.

The Knicks hadn’t won since 1973. That’s longer than most of their current players have been alive. The drought was so long that the franchise became a punchline in its own city. Then Jalen Brunson decided to stop being funny.

How the Knicks actually pulled it off

The 2026 Finals were over in five games. The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs, the same team that swept them in the 1999 Finals. Only this time it was different. Brunson averaged 32.6 points per game in the series and dropped 45 in the clincher while shooting over 50 percent from the floor. That’s not just good. That’s legendary.

The Knicks will try to repeat in 2026-27 with mostly the same starting five. But they’ll have to replace Mitchell Robinson off the bench, which means the front office has work to do.

For one night, though, none of that mattered. A Celtics fan walked out his door and saw police officers hugging firefighters. Strangers celebrating together. A city that had been waiting longer than most of its residents had been alive finally letting go. And for just a second, even someone from Boston had to smile.
