Kevin Durant spent his All-Star break in Philadelphia watching baseball, but he still found time to air out two of Fox Sports 1’s loudest NBA voices. The Rockets forward used his Instagram story this week to go after Colin Cowherd and Nick Wright in ways that felt less like a casual vent and more like a targeted sweep.
Durant posted a message that read, “Pack that lame (Colin Cowherd) up.” Then he turned to Wright. “Basketball would actually move forward if (Nick Wright) wasn’t involved. Hold up.”
The Instagram stories, first flagged by The Athletic’s Devon Henderson, didn’t include any specific Cowherd or Wright takes that set him off. But if you’ve followed Durant’s history with media, it doesn’t take much. The guy keeps a running list.
Stephen A. Smith learned this lesson years ago
Durant has gone after ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith before, and that beef has a longer shelf life. Back in 2015, Durant denied ever talking to Smith about his free agency plans and basically called him a liar. “I don’t talk to Stephen A. Smith at all. Nobody in my family — my friends — they don’t talk to Stephen A. Smith. So, he’s lying,” Durant said at the time. He added that his inner circle confirmed none of them had spoken to Smith, so whatever Smith was reporting was made up.
Smith, never one to let a shot slide, fired back on “First Take” with a warning. “You don’t want to make an enemy out of me,” Smith said on air. It was the kind of response that keeps that feud simmering even now, years later.
Durant vs. the talking heads is a one-sided war
This isn’t a new habit for Durant. He’s been calling out analysts for years, usually on X (formerly Twitter) but sometimes on Instagram depending on his mood. What’s interesting this time is that he went after two guys from the same network on the same night. It feels pointed.
Cowherd and Wright haven’t responded publicly yet. But if history tells us anything, they won’t stay quiet long. Cowherd tends to address criticism on his radio show, and Wright loves a back-and-forth. Durant clearly doesn’t care about making enemies in the media. He’s got the numbers, the rings, and apparently the time to scroll through Fox Sports 1 takes during the MLB All-Star Game.
We’ll see if either analyst takes the bait. If they do, Durant will probably reply from the practice court within an hour.
