ESPN Analyst Calls Celtics’ Handling of Jaylen Brown ‘Disrespectful and Embarrassing’

Jaylen Brown has been a cornerstone for the Boston Celtics for years. He’s averaged nearly 29 points a game. He’s put in the work. He’s bought into the franchise. And this summer, the Celtics have made it pretty clear they’re shopping him around.

That rubbed ESPN’s Vince Goodwill the wrong way. Hard.

“If they’re tired of Jaylen Brown, … that’s their business. But leaving him out there like this, when he’s put so much equity into this team, into this franchise, is disrespectful and embarrassing,” Goodwill said on Get Up.

The Celtics reportedly tried to flip Brown as part of a package for Giannis Antetokounmpo. That didn’t happen. But the rumor mill didn’t stop spinning. Other teams started popping up as possible landing spots. Tim MacMahon, also on Get Up, mentioned the Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons. The Houston Rockets have been in the mix too, partly because Brown already knows head coach Ime Udoka from Udoka’s Celtics days.

Brown has noticed. He’s been defending himself on social media, insisting he belongs in conversations about the league’s best players. He sounds frustrated. And honestly, can you blame him?

There’s no clear frontrunner right now, according to MacMahon. The Celtics haven’t said much publicly, and the whole situation feels messy. Brown has done everything the team has asked. He’s been a two-way force, a playoff performer, a guy who shows up. And now he’s the guy whose name keeps getting floated in trade talks while the organization stays quiet.

It’s a strange spot for a player who’s been that loyal. That productive. That consistent. Teams don’t usually treat their second-best player like a trade exception unless they’re ready to move on completely. Maybe Boston is. Maybe they’re just listening. Either way, leaving Brown hanging out there while the speculation drags on isn’t a great look.

Brown’s deal with the Celtics runs for a few more years. He’s under contract. He’s not going anywhere unless Boston makes the call. But the longer this drags, the louder the noise gets. And the harder it is to pretend everything’s fine.
