€80M Price Tag, One Season of Great Play — Why Mateus Fernandes Is the Risky Bet Manchester United Has to Make

Let’s be honest: replacing Casemiro was never going to be simple. The Brazilian midfielder resurrected his Manchester United career with a commanding final two-thirds of the season, reminding everyone why he once patrolled the midfield for Real Madrid. But now he’s gone on a free transfer, and Old Trafford has a hole in the middle of the pitch that needs filling. The question is whether a 21-year-old with one standout season at West Ham is ready to step into that void.

Michael Owen, for one, thinks he is. The former United striker has pointed to Mateus Fernandes as the ideal candidate to take over, calling him “exactly what they need.” Speaking to the Metro, Owen didn’t hold back: “Casemiro’s shoes are big shoes to fill. Personally, if I was Michael Carrick, if I was Manchester United, I’d be getting Fernandes from West Ham.”

Fernandes is coming off an impressive campaign with the Hammers, and the interest has been predictable. Arsenal have circled, but according to recent reports from the Times, United are currently leading the race for the Portuguese youngster. The price tag is steep — around £80 million — and Sky Sports reported this week that the Red Devils are preparing their opening offer.

The club has not confirmed any bid, and sources close to the negotiations suggest West Ham are in no rush to sell a player who still has years left on his contract. Still, the momentum is clearly in United’s direction, with fans online noting that Fernandes brings a blend of energy, technical security, and forward passing that Casemiro sometimes lacked in his earlier days at the club.

Owen acknowledged that the transition won’t be easy. “You know lots of people were writing Casemiro off, but he had an incredible last two-thirds of the season,” he said. “Big shoes to fill.” He also floated other names — Elliot Anderson at Manchester City, Carlos Baleba at Brighton, and Alex Scott at Bournemouth — but landed squarely on Fernandes as his top choice.

The plan, according to insiders, would be to pair Fernandes with the more experienced Ederson, the Brazilian holding midfielder currently at Atalanta. That kind of veteran presence alongside a young playmaker could smooth the transition. But at £80 million, the pressure on Fernandes to perform immediately will be enormous.

Still, for a 21-year-old who has already shown he can handle the physicality and pace of the Premier League, the upside is significant. If United get this deal done, they may have just found the long-term answer to a problem that has haunted them since Casemiro’s arrival. The boots are big. But maybe Fernandes is ready to grow into them.
