Real Madrid Enters Fernandes Fight as Man Utd Moves Ahead of Arsenal

The race for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes is taking yet another turn. Manchester United appears to have pulled ahead of Arsenal in the pursuit of the 21-year-old Portugal international, but now a new heavyweight looms: Real Madrid.

According to a report from The Times, United officials are “increasingly confident” they can land Fernandes, who is expected to leave West Ham following the club’s relegation to the Championship on the final day of the Premier League season. Arsenal had been “actively pursuing” the youngster in recent weeks but are not willing to meet West Ham’s £80 million valuation, which has opened the door for United.

But the same report indicates that Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has “requested” the Spanish giants enter the bidding. That adds a layer of complexity to an already crowded transfer race. Fernandes, who joined West Ham from Southampton last summer for an initial £38 million, made 38 league appearances last season, notching five goals and four assists. Southampton still holds a 15 percent sell-on clause from that deal.

United has already added one midfielder this window, signing Ederson from Atalanta for an initial £35 million plus £4 million in potential add-ons on a four-year contract. The club could still pursue a third midfield addition if it manages to offload Manuel Ugarte, who has disappointed since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £42 million (potentially rising to £50.7 million with performance add-ons) in 2024.

For Arsenal, the decision to balk at the price tag reflects a broader strategy. The Gunners have been disciplined in the market this summer, and walking away from a deal that could climb above £80 million for a player with just one full Premier League season under his belt fits that pattern. But it also means Mikel Arteta may need to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcement.

Fernandes, meanwhile, finds himself at the center of a three-way tug-of-war that could define his career trajectory. Stay in England with United or Arsenal, or head to Madrid under Mourinho? The coming weeks will determine which direction the Portuguese talent heads.

For now, United holds the inside track — but with Real Madrid lurking, nothing is locked in.
