Arsenal Pulls Out of £80m Race for Mateus Fernandes as Manchester United Moves to Front

Manchester United has emerged as the clear frontrunner to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer after Arsenal decided the £80 million price tag was too steep, according to The Guardian.

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder is expected to leave the relegated Hammers, and United is positioning itself as the most likely landing spot. Real Madrid, now under José Mourinho, and Paris Saint-Germain remain interested, but early concrete movement has come from Old Trafford.

Why Fernandes Fits United’s Need

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton for £38 million last summer after arriving at St Mary’s from Vitória Guimarães. Last season, he recorded five goals and five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, operating primarily as a right-sided No. 8 who can also drop into a double pivot. That versatility is exactly what United’s midfield has lacked since Casemiro’s decline.

West Ham’s relegation to the Championship makes a sale almost certain. The club posted a £104.2 million loss last year and needs to raise more than £100 million this summer through player sales. Fernandes is their most marketable asset, under contract until 2030 — giving the Hammers leverage on the fee. Southampton also holds a 15% sell-on clause on any profit, which is driving West Ham’s insistence on a premium.

Personal Terms and Preferred Destination

Several reports indicate Fernandes has identified Old Trafford as his preferred destination. The chance to play alongside Bruno Fernandes and work under manager Michael Carrick — a former United midfielder — is said to be a significant factor. If that holds, personal terms should not be an obstacle.

Arsenal’s exit narrows the realistic competition considerably. The Guardian notes that Real Madrid could still make a push, and United is wary of losing Fernandes to Mourinho, his former boss. PSG remains in the background but has not made a formal move.

Financial Obstacles and Likely Deal Structure

West Ham’s financial position cuts both ways. Relegation weakens their hand in a prolonged negotiation, but the club’s need to raise cash quickly also creates urgency. Briefings in England suggest United has opened talks but is aiming for a structured deal in the region of £60–65 million including add-ons, with Southampton’s sell-on clause shaping their ceiling.

United has already moved in midfield this summer, bringing in Éderson from Atalanta as the first piece of Carrick’s rebuild following Casemiro’s free departure. Fernandes would be the second and more expensive addition, representing a significant commitment for a club that has publicly stated its intention to resist inflated valuations.

According to Stretty News, United conducted a thorough assessment of Fernandes before the season ended — this is not a reactive pursuit. A formal bid is expected in the coming weeks, with West Ham’s parallel sales of Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville likely to influence how quickly they need to move on their valuation.
