D.C. United Just Paid $2.4 Million for an LAFC Homegrown. Here’s Why.

D.C. United picked up a 22-year-old El Salvador international from LAFC on Monday, and the price tag says a lot about how they see him fitting in. Nathan Ordaz is headed to the nation’s capital in a deal that starts at $2.375 million guaranteed and could climb another $500,000 if he hits performance bonuses.

For a guy who put up 14 goals and 8 assists across 98 appearances in all comps for LAFC, that’s a solid bet. Ordaz signed a homegrown deal with the Black & Gold back in 2022 and worked his way up through their system. LAFC co-president John Thorrington made a point of calling it a “tremendous example of the pathway” they’ve built, from the youth setup through LAFC2 and into the first team.

D.C.’s managing director of soccer operations, Dr. Erkut Sogut, didn’t mince words about what they’re getting. “Nathan is an exciting talent who has shown a natural ability to score goals and provide assists,” Sogut said. “He works relentlessly on both sides of the ball, and he provides us flexibility as he can play as both a striker and a winger.”

What Ordaz brings to a crowded attack

D.C. already has Tai Baribo and Louis Munteanu leading the line — both signed as Designated Players over the winter. So adding Ordaz isn’t about plugging a hole. It’s more about depth and versatility. He can play centrally or out wide, which gives the coaching staff options when they need to change a game.

On the international side, Ordaz has 2 goals in 14 caps for El Salvador. He made his debut for La Selecta in 2024 and is still early in his national team career.

Meanwhile, LAFC’s attack is headlined by Son Heung-Min and Denis Bouanga alongside David Martínez. So losing Ordaz doesn’t leave them thin. They’re likely banking on the allocation money to make another move down the line.

One thing that stands out here is the timing. This isn’t a winter rebuild trade. It’s a mid-season addition, which means D.C. sees Ordaz as someone who can contribute right now, not just a project for next year. Sogut made that clear when he said they’re excited for Nathan to join “in the second half of our season as we continue to re-shape our roster and build a winning culture.”

Ordaz is the kind of player who doesn’t jump off the stat sheet but consistently makes the right run or the extra pass. LAFC fans will remember him as a reliable piece who never looked out of place even when the lights were brightest. Now he gets to prove that was more than just the system he played in.
