Camavinga Told Man United No Thanks. Here’s What That Means for Their Midfield Search.

Manchester United’s summer shopping list at midfield keeps getting longer. But one name they’ve been eyeing? Not interested.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed this week that United’s recruitment team has held internal discussions about Eduardo Camavinga as a potential third midfield signing. The Frenchman fits the profile they’re chasing: a defensive midfielder who can cover ground, win duels, and operate in tight spaces. They’ve been circling his compatriot Aurelien Tchouameni too, though that ship appears to have sailed since Tchouameni agreed to a new contract at Real Madrid. They’ve also reached out to AS Roma’s Manu Kone, per Romano.

But Camavinga? He’s staying put.

According to Romano, Camavinga wants to be a key part of Real Madrid’s plans next season. And the 23-year-old hasn’t signaled any desire to leave the Bernabeu, even though he got left off France’s World Cup squad partly because he wasn’t starting regularly in Madrid. Apparently that snag isn’t enough to push him out the door.

Realistically, any deal would only happen if Camavinga changes his mind. And right now he’s not budging.

The Player United Can’t Get

Camavinga came through Stade Rennes and once drew Paul Pogba comparisons because of his technical skill and physical tools. At 6-foot-1, he uses his long legs to cover ground and make tackles. He’s got serious stamina and work rate, which is why Real has sometimes slotted him in at fullback. On the ball, he likes to drop deep, pick it up from the defenders, and push it through the lines. He uses his frame and dribbling to shield and glide past people.

He wants to play as a number six though. That’s his preferred spot. And at Madrid, with all the star power in midfield, he hasn’t gotten that chance consistently. It’s hurt his development. Some would argue he should move somewhere he can play his natural position.

Spanish outlet SPORT reported last month that Real Madrid values him at around €60 million, which is about £51 million. But valuation doesn’t matter much if the player won’t leave.

United’s search continues. They’re clearly looking for a younger, high-energy presence in the middle of the park. Kone might be the more realistic target at this point. Camavinga looks like a name they can cross off, at least for now.
