Mason Greenwood’s Latest Move Just Cashed Manchester United a $13 Million Check

Mason Greenwood is on the move again. And this time, Manchester United is cashing in.

The 24-year-old forward has signed with Turkish club Fenerbahce, leaving Marseille after two seasons in France. The deal is worth €39 million plus add-ons, according to multiple reports, and it triggers a sell-on clause United insisted on when they sold him in 2024.

Back then, Marseille paid €31.6 million for Greenwood. United, knowing they had a rising talent on their hands even after everything that happened, negotiated a percentage of any future sale. Smart move. According to The Athletic, that clause is now worth around €13 million to the Red Devils.

Not bad for a player who hasn’t suited up for United since January 2022.

From academy star to global journey

Greenwood came through United’s youth system and looked like the real deal. He made his competitive debut in March 2019 and racked up over 120 appearances for the senior side. Quick, two-footed, composed in front of goal — he had all the tools.

Then came the charges in 2022. Attempted rape and assault. Greenwood denied everything, and the charges were eventually dropped. But the court of public opinion had already made its ruling. United faced massive backlash when they initially considered bringing him back, so they reversed course and sent him on loan to Getafe in Spain for the 2023-24 season.

He played well there. Ten goals in 36 games. Enough to convince Marseille to take a shot the following summer.

And Greenwood delivered in France. Across 81 appearances, he scored 48 goals and added 17 assists. Those numbers caught Fenerbahce’s attention, and now he’s headed to Istanbul.

England career still in limbo

Greenwood earned his senior England debut back in September 2020. He was 18 years old. Since then? Nothing. No call-ups, no caps, no national team future in sight. That part of his career hasn’t been revived, and there’s no indication it will be anytime soon.

For United, this is about as clean a resolution as they could have hoped for. They moved on from a complicated player, avoided a PR disaster, and now they’re collecting a windfall years later. The sell-on clause did exactly what it was supposed to do.

Fenerbahce gets a guy who’s scored 48 goals in Ligue 1 over two seasons. United gets a check for $13 million. And Greenwood gets another fresh start in a new league.

Everybody walks away from this deal with something.
