At 23, a Bruins Draft Pick Chose a Desk Over the Ice. Here’s Why.

Mason Langenbrunner is 23 years old. He was a fifth-round pick of the Boston Bruins in 2020. He captained Harvard this past season. And now he’s done playing hockey.

Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe reported Saturday that Langenbrunner plans to retire before ever signing an NHL entry-level contract. Instead of chasing a pro career, he’s heading into the business world. He’s already working as a partner in two startup companies, putting that Harvard business degree to use.

The Bruins held his signing rights until Aug. 15. They won’t get the chance to use them.

From Eden Prairie to the ECAC Quarterfinals

Langenbrunner played four seasons at Harvard, appearing in 130 games and putting up nine goals and 26 points. This past season he had two goals and eight assists in 32 games as the Crimson went 16-16-2 before getting bounced by Cornell in the ECAC Tournament quarterfinals. He was a regular on the blue line but mostly served as a depth defenseman at the college level.

Before Harvard, he spent a season with the Fargo Force in the USHL. Before that, he was at Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota, where his offensive game was a bigger part of his identity.

He’s the son of Jamie Langenbrunner, who played 18 seasons in the NHL and won two Stanley Cups. Jamie recently left the Bruins front office after 11 years to join the Nashville Predators as a special assistant to GM Chris MacFarland. So hockey pedigree? Absolutely. The desire to keep playing? Apparently not enough to turn down a shot at building something off the ice.

What It Means for the Bruins

Boston still has a couple other unsigned college picks floating out there from the 2020 and 2021 drafts. Forward Oskar Jellvik isn’t expected to sign either after he left Boston College to join Rogle BK in Sweden. Goaltender Philip Svedeback is still talking with the Bruins after helping Providence College win the Hockey East regular-season title this year.

Langenbrunner was one of four Bruins picks in 2020. Mason Lohrei and Riley Duran are still in the organization. Trevor Kuntar signed with Buffalo as a free agent back in December 2025. So Boston didn’t whiff on the whole class. But they definitely lost one here.

It’s not every day a 23-year-old with NHL bloodlines and an available contract walks away. But Langenbrunner apparently saw a different path and took it. No drama. No farewell tour. Just a handshake and a hard pivot to the startup life.
