Newcastle United thought they had this one wrapped up. A deal around €60 million with SC Freiburg for Johan Manzambi was agreed. The medical was scheduled. The announcement was being prepped. And then Aston Villa called again.
According to Sky Germany, Villa has reopened contact with Freiburg for the 20-year-old Swiss midfielder. This isn’t a first approach. They’ve been circling for weeks. But this time it feels different because Newcastle already has a green light from the club. The only thing left is the player’s signature.
The Knee Injury Complicates Everything
Manzambi was one of the breakout stars at the World Cup. He played a key role for Switzerland before a knee injury knocked him out of their last two matches. That injury hasn’t scared off either Premier League club. Scouts still see a midfielder who can control tempo, break lines, and finish chances. Freiburg has him under contract through 2030, so the German club is in no rush to sell cheap.
But here’s the thing about Villa’s renewed interest. They don’t just want to drive up the price. They believe they can offer a clearer path to minutes. Newcastle has Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and a few other midfielders in that creative box-to-box mold. Villa’s midfield, especially with the 2026-27 season approaching, has more rotation potential.
Newcastle remains optimistic Manzambi will give his approval. A final decision is expected in the next day or two. That feels quick for a deal this size. But the longer it drags, the more room Villa has to make their pitch.
What Freiburg Wants
Freiburg has a history of holding firm on valuations. They don’t budge easily. €60 million is already a massive fee for a 20-year-old who just broke into the senior national team. But if Villa pushes the number higher, Freiburg will listen.
The Swiss international can play as a No. 8 or a more advanced No. 10. His ability to operate in tight spaces and pick out a pass under pressure is what separates him from other young midfielders on the market. That skill set is exactly what Villa needs to complement their current midfielders who are more comfortable going box-to-box than unlocking a low block.
Newcastle has been in this spot before and lost out late. They’ll be pushing hard to get the paperwork signed before Villa can send a delegation to Freiburg. But they know as well as anyone that a player’s mind can change overnight.
