Liverpool Shuts Door on Salah Stay Despite Teammate’s Optimistic Comments

Liverpool has no intention of reversing course on Mohamed Salah’s departure, according to sources familiar with the club’s thinking — pushing back against recent speculation from one of Salah’s international teammates that a late U-turn might still be possible.

The Reds announced back in March that Salah would leave at the end of the 2025-26 season, a decision framed as a chance for fans to properly salute one of the most decorated players in club history. The official statement described it as closing an “illustrious nine-year chapter” at Anfield, with Salah himself requesting the early announcement out of “respect and gratitude” for supporters.

That clarity hasn’t stopped lingering whispers. Egyptian goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy told ON Time Sports this week that “the situation might change and he could still stay,” adding that Salah told him he “doesn’t know anything about his future yet.”

Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, quickly pushed back on that narrative, writing on social media: “Mohamed is doing perfectly fine and neither he nor I prefer to discuss sensitive future plans with people not involved in them. Both he and I are very private about these things.”

Still, journalist Ben Jacobs — who also provided an update on Cody Gakpo’s situation — was definitive when asked about Salah. According to Jacobs, Liverpool “have no plans to keep” the forward despite El-Shenawy’s hopeful take. The club, he added, is not actively looking to extend the stay of a player who has scored more than 200 goals for the club.

Meanwhile, Turkey continues to surface as a potential next stop. Aziz Yildirim, the newly elected president of Fenerbahce, claimed during his campaign that he could bring Salah to the Super Lig side. Ertan Torunogullari, the director of football under the previous administration, told reporters that Salah was “very keen on coming to Türkiye” and that negotiations over salary had already made progress.

“The meetings he had with us were extremely positive. We had established common ground with him on many issues, including his salary,” Torunogullari said. “If the new administration makes such a request, I believe Salah will wear the Fenerbahce jersey.”

It’s worth noting that the club has not confirmed any active talks with Salah’s camp since the election. And with Liverpool making clear that this season is a farewell tour, the window for any dramatic reversal appears closed.

As for Salah himself — the man who transformed from a Chelsea reject into a Liverpool immortal — his focus, according to those close to him, remains on finishing the season strong. The emotional goodbye tour is already underway at Anfield, and no amount of outside chatter seems likely to rewrite that ending.
