Draymond Green Calls Out European Players as ‘Dirty’ — and Points Directly at Victor Wembanyama

Draymond Green has never been one to shy away from controversy, but his latest comments are drawing a line between two basketball cultures — and putting Victor Wembanyama squarely in the crosshairs.

On the latest episode of The Draymond Green Show, the Golden State Warriors veteran pushed back against the label of being a dirty player by redirecting the conversation toward European-born competitors. Green specifically referenced Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs’ French phenom, and argued that European players — including Wembanyama — bring a style of play that Green considers fundamentally different from what American fans expect.

“Victor Wembanyama’s a great player. Victor Wembanyama’s a European player. And I’ve been on record saying European players are dirty, and everybody’s like ‘Draymond shouldn’t say that,’ no, Draymond will f*** you up,” Green said on his show. He then clarified he doesn’t see himself the same way: “I’m not dirty. It’s a completely different thing, and I don’t think anyone that I played against would tell you, man, he’s dirty.”

Green’s remarks came amid ongoing analysis of the Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals series, where Wembanyama’s physical screen on OG Anunoby in Game 4 sparked debate. The Spurs blew a 29-point lead in that game, and the Knicks now hold a commanding 3-1 series advantage. Green didn’t stop at one incident, claiming a pattern exists.

“Victor Wembanyama is a European player; they are a bit dirty. It’s why beating France in France was such a big deal,” Green said, referencing Team USA’s gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics. “Europeans want to earn our game, and they are a bit dirty. I’ve said this before.”

While Green stopped short of saying Wembanyama intended to injure Anunoby on that screen, he implied the Spurs star has made questionable plays before. The comments are striking given Green’s own reputation — he was suspended multiple times during the 2023-24 season for on-court incidents, including stepping on Domantas Sabonis and putting Rudy Gobert in a headlock.

Elsewhere in the episode, Green turned his attention to Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox, who made a critical late-game error in Game 4. With the Spurs clinging to a one-point lead, Fox missed a contested layup instead of dribbling out the clock. The Knicks’ OG Anunoby blocked Fox’s shot at the rim, then scored the game-winning putback off Jalen Brunson’s missed three-pointer.

Green compared Fox’s gaffe to Cavaliers guard JR Smith’s infamous blunder in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals, when Smith dribbled out the clock thinking Cleveland was ahead — but the Cavs were actually trailing the Warriors. Green polled the Inside the NBA crew on which mistake was worse. Shaquille O’Neal didn’t hesitate, calling Fox’s the worst because the Spurs had already surrendered a 29-point lead and could have tied the series 2-2.

The irony of Green criticizing others for dirty or careless play is not lost on fans online, with many pointing out his own track record. But Green remains unapologetic, doubling down on his belief that European players operate under a different — and dirtier — code.
