Kathy Hochul Just Saved Knicks Fans’ Game 5 Tickets From Cancellation — Here’s How

New York Knicks fans were staring down a nightmare scenario just hours before the biggest game the franchise has seen in decades. The San Antonio Spurs, hosts of Friday night’s potential NBA Finals-clinching Game 5, had reportedly placed restrictions on tickets purchased through Ticketmaster — threatening to cancel seats bought by Knicks supporters. That’s when New York Governor Kathy Hochul stepped in and flipped the script.

Hochul took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to announce that her office had intervened directly with Ticketmaster, ensuring that no fan who bought a ticket through the platform would have their purchase voided. The governor framed the move as a matter of fairness, not just fandom.

“After hearing concerns from Knicks fans, my team got in touch with Ticketmaster, and I’m pleased to confirm that no fan who purchased a ticket through the platform will have their ticket canceled,” Hochul wrote. “New Yorkers will have a fair shot to show up and show out. Knicks in five!”

The governor added that “thousands of New Yorkers” had already bought tickets and booked flights to San Antonio for the game at Frost Bank Center — money that would have been wasted if the cancellations had gone through. Before reaching out to Ticketmaster, Hochul had publicly called on both the platform and the Spurs to reverse course.

“Ticketmaster and the Spurs should reverse this decision and let the fans who bought those seats keep them. Until then, on behalf of Knicks fans everywhere, I’m calling foul,” she posted earlier in the day.

The intervention means the Spurs’ home arena will now see a visible splash of orange and blue in the stands — a reminder that New York fans travel hard, especially when a championship is on the line. The Knicks haven’t hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy since 1973, when Willis Reed led the team past the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. A win Friday would deliver the franchise its first title in 52 years, closing the series 4-1.

But Hochul wasn’t the only New York politician sending a message ahead of tip-off. City Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged Knicks fans to celebrate responsibly if the team closes out the series Saturday night — a subtle warning that the city is ready for a party, but not a riot.

The Knicks have been dominant throughout the playoffs, and Game 5 represents a chance to end one of the longest title droughts in major American sports. For thousands of fans who scrambled to buy flights and tickets, Hochul’s move ensures they’ll be there to see it — not stuck watching from a sports bar in Brooklyn.
