Jazz Rookie Darryn Peterson Answered a Question With One Word: ‘Kobe’

Utah Jazz rookie Darryn Peterson is having a Summer League to remember. And his one-word answer to a reporter’s question on defense is already going viral.

When asked about his defensive mentality, Peterson didn’t hesitate. He just said, “Kobe.” That was it. The clip spread fast, and it made sense as soon as you watch his game.

Peterson, the No. 2 pick out of high school, is averaging 26.5 points, 7.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds through four Summer League games between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. He shot 52.8% from the field and 43.8% from three. That’s not just good for a rookie. That’s good for anyone.

He dropped 28 on the Hawks on July 4. Then a double-double of 25 and 12 against Memphis two days later. Next came 24 against Washington and 23 versus the Clippers. Consistent, efficient, and confident.

But what stands out most might be how much he leans on Kobe Bryant’s mentality. Peterson has talked openly about modeling his two-way game after Bryant. And it shows. At 6-foot-10 with a long wingspan, he’s already a problem on defense. He stays in front of his man, closes out on shooters, and reads passing lanes like a veteran.

Bryant made 12 All-Defensive teams, tied for second most ever, and got nine First Team nods. Peterson isn’t there yet, but the foundation is real.

The Jazz face the Bulls on Monday in Las Vegas at 8 p.m. CST. It’s another chance for Peterson to back up the talk with a little more action. And knowing him, he’ll probably do it while channeling the Black Mamba.
