Brewers Scratch Jacob Misiorowski. Here’s What Comes Next for Milwaukee’s Ace.

Jacob Misiorowski was supposed to start Sunday against Paul Skenes and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Instead, he got scratched with arm fatigue. Which, if you are a Brewers fan, is a headline that makes you wince even if the team says it is nothing serious.

The good news, according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, is that Misiorowski should start throwing again on Tuesday. He will not pitch in the first series after the All-Star break. But he might be lined up to face the New York Mets in the second series. And he is not expected to miss more than this one start. No IL stint. Just a breather.

Misiorowski confirmed to John Perrotto of MLB.com that the decision stings. “It [stinks] to miss a start and the All-Star Game, but I know it’s the right thing to do in this situation,” he said. “My arm is a little tired.”

He also pushed back on the narrative that missing a matchup with Skenes made it worse. “Even if I were pitching against someone off the street, I’d be disappointed not to pitch,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who I’m pitching against.” That is the kind of quote you expect from a guy who has thrown 670 pitches at 100 miles per hour or faster. He wants the ball. Period.

For context, Misiorowski is having an absurd season. He is 10-4 with a 1.62 ERA, a 0.76 WHIP, and 167 strikeouts. Those are video-game numbers. The kind that make you check the leaderboard twice. He leads MLB in ERA and WHIP. So when the Brewers say they are being careful, they mean it.

Milwaukee sits at 59-36, first place in the NL Central. They have been a pleasant surprise. But if you are them, you do not mess around with a young arm like this. You sit him one start. You let him skip the All-Star Game. And you hope that a few extra days of rest keep him sharp for the second half.

Sunday’s game is still on. The Brewers are trying to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Pirates. But the real story is what happens next week and the week after. Misiorowski will throw again Tuesday. If he feels good, he gets the ball against the Mets. And then, really, the season starts.
