The Dodgers locker room isn’t panicking. But there’s definitely some frustration brewing after Arizona came into Dodger Stadium and swept a three-game series. The final scoreboard told an ugly story: 23-8, Diamondbacks over the Dodgers across three games. That’s not how a team with an 11.5-game division lead is supposed to look.
Dave Roberts, the man who’s managed this franchise to back-to-back World Series titles, didn’t sugarcoat what he saw.
“At the end of the day, they outplayed us,” Roberts told reporters after the sweep. “They wanted it more than we did. They are a desperate team and they played hard and they fought for it. We have not played well for the last five or six games and every game is important.”
That’s about as direct as Roberts gets. He’s usually measured, keeps things even-keeled. But when a team that’s been cruising through the season gets bullied at home right before the break, the tone shifts.
The Dodgers have now lost five of their last seven. That’s not a crisis considering how much cushion they’ve built in the NL West, but it’s a pattern worth watching. Roberts isn’t the type to let things slide just because the standings look comfortable.
The break comes at the right time
The All-Star break gives everyone a chance to reset, and the Dodgers need it. Roberts made it clear that the team’s execution has slipped, especially in key moments.
“When you get opportunities to cash in a run, we have to be better,” he said.
That quote cuts to the heart of the problem. The Dodgers weren’t just getting outhit — they were getting outplayed in the details. Missed opportunities, defensive lapses, the kind of stuff that gets overlooked when you’re winning but becomes glaring when you’re getting swept.
Next up: a return to the Bronx
After the break, the Dodgers open the second half with a three-game series against the Yankees in New York. It’ll be their first trip back to Yankee Stadium since they beat the Yankees in five games to win the 2024 World Series.
That context matters. A series against the Yankees always gets the Dodgers’ attention. And after the way they closed the first half, Roberts won’t have to work hard to get his players locked in. The stage is already set.
