Chelsea Just Jumped Into the Mix for a Man United Midfield Target. Here’s the Latest.

Manchester United’s summer shopping list keeps getting more complicated. After missing out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, the club’s midfield search just got another twist. And it involves Chelsea, again.

Botafogo’s Danilo Santos was already on United’s radar as a cut-price option. But according to Brazilian outlet FogaoNet, Chelsea has made contact with Botafogo about the 25-year-old. That’s on top of earlier interest from Newcastle, Arsenal, and even Galatasaray. So the race is officially crowded.

Why United Needs Midfield Help Right Now

Let’s be real. United’s midfield situation is a little dire. Casemiro left as a free agent. Manuel Ugarte tore his ACL at the 2026 World Cup. And a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson fell through — reportedly over fitness concerns. So the Red Devils need bodies. Badly.

Danilo Santos has experience in the Premier League from his time at Nottingham Forest, though it didn’t go great. He left for Botafogo in 2025 and has quietly rebuilt his reputation. This season he’s put up 10 goals and 3 assists in 24 games across all competitions. Not bad for a defensive midfielder.

Danilo’s World Cup Showing Didn’t Hurt His Stock, Either

He was on Brazil’s 2026 World Cup roster but barely played as the Selecao got bounced by Norway in the Round of 16. Still, his all-around game and that left foot are intriguing. And with a price tag reportedly under the £34 million mark, he’s a value play — if United can get him.

One thing worth watching: Chelsea might see Danilo as a replacement for Andrey Santos, who United reportedly signed earlier this summer (though nothing’s official yet). So you’ve got a little transfer triangle brewing between these two clubs. Again.

Newcastle Still Leads the Pack, But Chelsea’s Late Entry Changes Things

FogaoNet says Newcastle is the frontrunner. They’re looking at Danilo as a possible replacement for Bruno Guimaraes. That makes sense. But Chelsea jumping in complicates it. The Blues have money and a track record of swooping in late.

Galatasaray is also kicking the tires, but Botafogo wants to sell to a European side for the right fee. So it’s basically a Premier League battle at this point.

For United, the question is simple: How badly do they want this guy? Because if they hesitate, Chelsea could grab him. And after a summer of near-misses, INEOS can’t afford another one. Especially not for a player who might be a steal at the right price.
