The New York Yankees have been hunting for bullpen help for what feels like forever. And every summer, Mason Miller’s name comes up. But this time, the rumor has some actual teeth to it.
MLB Network analyst Steve Phillips laid out a trade package on MLB Now that involves the Yankees sending four players to San Diego for the Padres’ All-Star closer. It’s a two-pitcher, two-hitter combo: lefty Ryan Weathers, righty Will Warren, outfield prospect Spencer Jones and switch-hitting Jasson Dominguez. The tweet got people talking. And honestly, it might be the kind of deal that actually makes sense for both sides.
Miller has been an absolute monster in 2026. Through the first half, the 27-year-old has a 0.98 ERA, a 0.82 WHIP and 22 saves. He was throwing a 0.00 ERA through late April with 27 strikeouts in his first 13.1 innings. That’s not just good. That’s video-game level dominance. The guy hits 104 mph on the radar gun and makes hitters look like they’re swinging underwater.
Why the Padres Say Yes
San Diego isn’t exactly in a rebuild, but they’re not a sure bet for the playoffs either. If they’re hovering around .500 at the deadline, moving Miller for a package that restocks both the rotation and the outfield pipeline is a no-brainer.
Weathers has untapped upside. The Yankees picked him up from the Marlins in January 2026, and he’s a lefty who touches 99.8 mph with a nasty sweeper. The Padres have a good track record with development. Warren is a steady mid-rotation arm who’s 7-3 with a 3.73 ERA in 17 starts this season. That’s not flashy, but it’s real value.
On the position player side, Jones is a first-round pick from Vanderbilt with raw power that’s already produced a .958 OPS in Triple-A before his MLB debut. Dominguez is only 23 and already has significant big league experience. Both are toolsy, both are under team control for years. That’s the kind of long-term value a team like San Diego needs to think about.

The Yankees Get Their Guy
Losing Weathers and Warren would thin out the Yankees’ rotation depth, but think about what you’re getting back. A closer who can erase leads in the eighth and ninth innings. A guy who makes you feel like the game is over after six. With Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton (when healthy), Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice in the lineup, the Yankees are built to win tight games late. Miller turns a good bullpen into a truly elite one.
Phillips is right. This is a deal worth making. The question is whether Brian Cashman has the guts to pull the trigger before someone else does.
