Rowdy Tellez Is Back With the Braves on a Minor League Deal After Brief DFA Stint

The Atlanta Braves just made a quiet but interesting roster move. Veteran first baseman Rowdy Tellez is signing a new minor league contract with the club, according to the New York Post. This comes just days after the Braves designated him for assignment.

Tellez appeared in seven games for Atlanta during the 2026 season before getting cut loose. He had just two hits in 10 at-bats, including a home run, and finished with a .200 average. That is a very small sample size — too small to draw any real conclusions about what he has left.

But here is the thing about Rowdy Tellez. He has 123 career home runs in parts of nine big league seasons across six teams. He has more than 2,300 career at-bats. And while the 2026 big league numbers are thin, his time in Triple-A this season told a different story.

Playing for the Gwinnett Stripers, Tellez crushed eight home runs and drove in 33 runs. Those are the kind of numbers that keep a front office paying attention, even if the big league squad already has a full 26-man roster.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Tellez’s 11 plate appearances this season are the fewest he has had in any major league campaign since his debut with the 2018 Blue Jays. Since then, he has regularly logged 300-plus plate appearances in full seasons, plus 127 during the shortened 2020 schedule. But in recent years, he has settled into a power-over-OBP role off the bench. His career line sits at .234/.299/.437, with nearly all of his production coming against right-handed pitching.

What This Means for Atlanta

The Braves have been one of the real surprises in MLB this season. With Walt Weiss taking over as manager, the team sits at 52-37 and leads the NL East. That is a strong record, but the club has dropped six of its last 10 games heading into a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates starting Tuesday.

Bringing Tellez back on a minor league deal gives the Braves some insurance and depth. He is not going to start over Matt Olson at first base. But if an injury happens or the team needs a lefty power bat off the bench in a stretch run, they now have a proven veteran sitting in the minors ready to go.

It is a low-risk move for a team that has been winning all year. And for Tellez, it keeps him in an organization that clearly still sees value in what he can do with a bat in his hands.
