Rafael Leao Tried to Sell Himself to Man United and Arsenal. Both Said No.

Rafael Leao wanted out of AC Milan this summer. He made that clear. He even made it known — publicly, through intermediaries — that he’d welcome a move to the Premier League. London. Manchester. He wasn’t picky.

But according to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, when a well-known intermediary reached out to Premier League clubs offering Leao’s services, the response was a collective pass. Arsenal had a video call with the agent as recently as late May. They declined. Manchester United got the same offer. They passed too.

That’s not what anyone expected six months ago. Leao, who Zlatan Ibrahimovic once called “magical,” was supposed to be one of the most coveted wingers on the market. AC Milan was willing to sell for around £43 million. That’s not cheap but it’s not crazy for a player with his ceiling. And yet, no takers.

What changed?

Leao’s form has dipped. That’s the simplest explanation. He’s still capable of those explosive runs and match-winning moments, but they’ve become less frequent. His attitude has also been questioned behind the scenes, and that kind of reputation follows a player when clubs do their homework.

On top of that, his role with Portugal has shrunk. A big World Cup showing might have reignited interest, but Roberto Martínez hasn’t made him a centerpiece. That matters. Clubs want to see consistent production at the highest level, not flashes.

United’s left wing mess

Manchester United was supposed to be in the market for a left winger this summer. Marcus Rashford was widely expected to leave, with Barcelona looking like his most likely destination after his strong loan spell there. That would have left Michael Carrick’s squad without a natural option on that side.

But now there’s uncertainty. Rumors suggest Rashford might actually stay. That would change everything for United’s recruitment. If he stays, they don’t need a starter. They might not need anyone.

If Rashford does leave, United’s top target appears to be Crysencio Summerville, not Leao. That tells you something.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray might be the club that actually gets a deal done with Milan. They’ve been mentioned as a possible destination. That’s a long way from Manchester or London, and it’s not what Leao had in mind when he started shopping himself around.
