Manchester United lost the race for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes in the span of about a week. Two priority midfield targets. Both gone. Anderson is headed to Manchester City for a reported £116 million, and Fernandes picked Tottenham for £85 million. United had interest in both guys but decided the prices were too rich for them.
Which raises the obvious question: is the club being smart or just cheap?
BBC’s Simon Stone checked in with United officials on where their heads are at. According to his report, the vibe from the top is calm. Deliberately calm. One official basically said: look, there are still seven weeks until the first league game at Hull, and almost nine weeks left in the window. That’s not nothing. The message they’re putting out is a simple one: “We are going to sign players.”
And they’re making a point to say it won’t matter whether those players are big names or not. What matters is how they play. That’s the lens.
United moved fast early in the window to lock down Atalanta’s Ederson, who will officially join after Brazil finishes up at the World Cup. That one got done quick. But the next dominoes haven’t fallen the way the club wanted, and that’s got some fans worried the front office is too timid to land elite talent.
Who else is on the list
The names still floating around include Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha. None of those guys are household names yet, which is kind of the point the club is making. They’re looking for fits, not headlines.
Worth noting: United is back in the Champions League next season and, at least on paper, could push for a Premier League title. That makes the midfield shopping list more than just a nice-to-have. It’s the difference between competing and just showing up.
Whether United actually lands any of those secondary targets — or pivots to someone else entirely in the next few weeks — remains to be seen. But for now, the front office is betting that patience doesn’t look like panic. And they’re betting the fans will see it that way too.
