Clippers Sent Mixed Signals on Jaylen Brown. Their Kawhi Leonard Talks Tell a Different Story.

There’s a strange disconnect floating around NBA circles right now, and it involves the Los Angeles Clippers and Celtics wing Jaylen Brown. According to one league executive who spoke with ESPN, the Clippers are desperate to land Brown — that they want him badly.

But then you talk to actual reporters who cover the league, and the picture shifts completely.

Marc Stein and Jake Fischer say the Clippers are not actually interested in Brown. Not even a little. Meanwhile, the same franchise reportedly has momentum in trade conversations with the Toronto Raptors involving Kawhi Leonard. That deal has what one source called serious legs. Even if it falls apart, the Clippers aren’t expected to be real players for Brown.

So which version is true? Did the Clippers call Boston, hear the asking price, and quietly back away? Or was there never any real interest at all — just noise generated by a team trying to look busy? Nobody has confirmed either way. The team’s social media team even posted a happy birthday message for Leonard on Monday morning. He turned 35.

The Kawhi situation complicates everything

Moving Leonard makes a lot of sense for the Clippers. They’re stuck in a loaded Western Conference. Paul George is gone. The roster as constructed isn’t getting to the Finals. Trading Leonard now — while he still carries name value — could restock picks and younger players.

But a Brown trade is a different beast. He’s under contract for $183 million over the next three seasons. He’ll turn 30 this year. That’s a massive financial commitment for a team that would also have to gut its roster to make the numbers work.

The Clippers are a team without a clear direction right now. They’re too good to tank. Not good enough to contend. Brown could push them closer to contender status, but the price might be too steep for a front office that’s already watched its big bet on Leonard and George come up empty.

There’s also the question of whether Brown would even want to go there. He’s been a central piece in Boston, a Finals team. The Clippers don’t offer the same stability or star power next to him. At least not right now.

The rumor mill will keep churning. The Clippers have a decision to make on Kawhi first. Until that happens, everything else is just background noise.
