Scottie Scheffler looked human for about five days. Then he went right back to being Scottie Scheffler.
At the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, the world No. 1 shot a 10-under 60 on Friday. That tied his career low. It also put him within one putt of joining Jim Furyk as the only player in PGA Tour history with multiple rounds under 60. Furyk shot 58 at this same course, TPC River Highlands, back in 2016.
Scheffler’s round included 10 birdies. He made putts from everywhere. According to the PGA Tour, he gained 4.7 strokes on the greens in the early wave Friday, more than anyone else in the field. That’s the part that stings a little — because for all the talk about his putting struggles, it came together almost perfectly. Almost.
On the 18th hole, Scheffler had a 12-footer for birdie and a 59. It slid by the left edge. He dropped to a knee, then smiled. He knew how close he was.
“I felt like I had a good look at it,” he said afterward. “It was a putt I’ve made plenty of times.”
Still, a 60 is a 60. And it bumped Scheffler past Eric Cole to the top of the leaderboard. He’s won this tournament before — in 2022, when he beat Sahith Theegala in a playoff. So the course suits him. Even after a weird wardrobe issue Thursday where his shirt kept coming untucked, he’s in position again.
A 30th Birthday Without a Major
Scheffler turned 30 on Sunday at the U.S. Open. He didn’t get the win there — Wyndham Clark did, which denied Scheffler his first shot at the career grand slam. But he’s bounced back quickly. This year has been quieter by his standards: one win back in January at the American Express. For a guy who won four times in 2023 and twice in 2024, that’s a drought.
But a win this week would be his 21st on Tour. Not bad for someone who just hit 30.
Scheffler has a tradition in Connecticut. He and Tom Kim, who share a birthday week, usually hit up New Haven for apizza — the coal-fired, chewy-crusted style the city is known for. Frank Pepe’s is the usual stop. If he wins Sunday, he’ll put on the navy blazer they give the champion and probably grab another pie on the way out.
Right now, though, he’s got two more rounds to play. And a putter that finally showed up.
