AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson Will Face Off on Night One of Summer League

NBA Summer League is still weeks away, but we already know the can’t-miss matchup on opening night. AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson, the top two picks in this year’s draft, will go head-to-head when the Washington Wizards meet the Utah Jazz on July 9 at 9 PM ET. Brett Siegel from ClutchPoints reported the date first.

This isn’t the first time these two have shared a floor. They tangled in high school and again in college. But this will be the first time the stakes come with an NBA jersey attached. For fans who’ve followed their careers, it’s a chance to see whether the scouting reports hold up against real pro competition.

What Dybantsa brings to Washington

The Wizards had the No. 1 pick and didn’t overthink it. Dybantsa is a fluid wing with positional size and a jumper that’s been getting better every season. Washington is still figuring out its identity after the rebuild, but they’ve added some veterans around him — Trae Young and Anthony Davis are both in the mix now — so the pressure won’t be all on the rookie from day one. Still, fans in D.C. are hoping he can be the kind of scoring engine this franchise hasn’t had in years.

Peterson lands in Utah with something to prove

Peterson went second overall to the Jazz, and that comes with its own kind of heat. He’s a natural scorer who can create his own shot off the dribble, and Utah’s roster is young enough that he should get plenty of touches immediately. The Jazz have some intriguing pieces already — Walker Kessler in the middle, Keyonte George handling the ball — but Peterson might be the one who determines how fast this rebuild accelerates.

Both guys are expected to make an impact right away. Summer League isn’t real NBA basketball, but it’s the closest thing to a preview we get before October. How they handle the pace, the physicality, and the bright lights on national TV will tell us something. Maybe not everything, but something.

For now, mark July 9 on your calendar. Two number one picks on the same floor, both trying to prove the hype was real. That’s about as good a opening act as Summer League has ever given us.
