Newcastle Enters Felix Nmecha Race as Man United Faces Another Midfield Battle

Manchester United’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha just got more complicated. Newcastle United has entered the conversation, according to multiple reports, and the timing couldn’t be worse for the Red Devils.

Nmecha, 25, is having a monster World Cup for Germany. He scored in the 7-1 rout of Curaçao and set up the stoppage-time winner against Ivory Coast. Julian Nagelsmann called him “world class.” Joshua Kimmich said the same. That’s not the kind of praise that goes unnoticed.

At 6’3″ with legit mobility and ball-carrying ability, Nmecha fits the modern midfield profile better than most. He put up five goals and three assists for Dortmund last season. Nuri Sahin, his former coach at Signal Iduna Park, described him as “exceptional” and said he can play any midfield role. That versatility is a big part of why half of Europe wants him.

Manchester United has been linked for weeks. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City have all kicked the tires too. City knows him well — Nmecha came through their academy. Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring the situation. Bayern Munich always keeps an eye on German internationals playing well in the Bundesliga.

Sky Germany reported that United is “intensifying efforts” to get a deal done. Sporting director Christopher Vivell, who knows the German market inside out, has made contact with Nmecha’s camp. But club-to-club talks haven’t started yet. That’s where Newcastle sees an opening.

Craig Hope of the Daily Mail reports the Magpies are ready to jump in, especially with Sandro Tonali likely heading to Tottenham. If Newcastle gets a club-record fee for Tonali, they’ll have the cash to spend on a replacement. Nmecha checks every box.

Dortmund might be open to negotiating his £73.5 million release clause, though some sources say that clause doesn’t activate until next year. Either way, this isn’t going to be cheap.

United has already seen Elliot Anderson leave for Manchester City. Tottenham is closing in on Mateus Fernandes. Losing another target to Newcastle would sting — especially after last summer, when players like Bryan Mbeumo and Mateus Cunha picked Old Trafford over St. James’ Park despite Champions League football being the difference maker.

That’s the wild card here. Newcastle has no European football next season. United can offer Champions League nights at the biggest stadium in the Premier League. For a player like Nmecha, that might be enough. Then again, cash talks. And Newcastle will have plenty of it.
