Ipswich Hires Gary O’Neil to Replace Kieran McKenna After Strasbourg Stint

Ipswich Town didn’t waste much time finding their next manager. The club officially announced Gary O’Neil as Kieran McKenna’s successor on Tuesday, handing the 43-year-old a contract through 2029.

O’Neil arrives at Portman Road after a two-year run with Strasbourg in France’s Ligue 1. His work there caught the eye of Ipswich’s brass, who needed a quick move after McKenna decided to walk away this summer following the club’s immediate return to the Premier League.

The Tractor Boys are back in the top flight after just one season away. But they’re heading into the new campaign without the guy who got them there. McKenna’s departure left a hole, and the front office moved fast to fill it with someone who has Premier League experience.

O’Neil knows the league well. He managed Bournemouth for a season and a half before getting let go in 2024, then rebuilt his reputation across the Channel. Strasbourg finished mid-table in each of his two seasons, but the football was solid and the squad developed under his watch. That was enough for Ipswich to make him the guy.

What O’Neil Brings to the Table

The former midfielder played over 400 games in England’s top two divisions. That playing career gave him a practical understanding of the game that shows in his coaching. He’s not flashy. He’s not a personality hire. He’s a technician who gets results through structure and discipline.

At Bournemouth, O’Neil kept the Cherries up in 2023-24 despite a thin squad and constant speculation about his job security. The way he organized that defense and squeezed every point out of a limited roster earned him respect around the league. Strasbourg saw the same thing and hired him before Ipswich could even make a call.

The deal runs through 2029, which gives O’Neil time to build something. Ipswich isn’t looking for a quick fix. They want stability after McKenna’s sudden exit threw the summer into chaos.

Pressure Starts Now

The Premier League doesn’t wait for anybody. Ipswich opens the season in August, and O’Neil has a short window to get his ideas across. The squad is basically the same one that came up from the Championship, with a few additions expected before the window closes.

Fans online were mixed on the hire. Some wanted a bigger name. Others pointed to O’Neil’s track record of overachieving with modest talent and said that’s exactly what Ipswich needs. Either way, the club has its man and the work starts now.
