Real Madrid Hasn’t Opened the Door for Tchouaméni. That’s Only Half of United’s Problem.

Manchester United’s summer shopping list has a big, expensive French name at the top of it. Aurélien Tchouaméni is the guy the club’s internal brain trust keeps circling as the ideal replacement for Casemiro. The problem is, getting him out of Madrid looks like a two-part headache that INEOS hasn’t solved yet.

Fabrizio Romano dropped the reality check on his YouTube channel this week. He confirmed United’s interest is real — has been for months — but then laid out the twin obstacles. First, Real Madrid hasn’t signaled any willingness to negotiate. Second, Tchouaméni’s current salary at the Bernabéu is a monster number. Matching it was never part of United’s plan.

That’s a problem because Tchouaméni isn’t some backup dreaming of playing time. He’s 26. He’s already won eight trophies in Madrid including La Liga and the Champions League. He started 49 games across all competitions last season, scoring twice and adding two assists. For a defensive midfielder who spends most of his time breaking up attacks and shielding the back four, those numbers are fine. What matters more is the way he reads the game and how comfortable he is on the ball. Those are the things that make United see him as the perfect partner for Kobbie Mainoo.

The Tchouaméni connection goes back a few years. United wanted him in 2022 too, but Madrid won that race. Casemiro ended up leaving the Bernabéu for Old Trafford that same summer, and the Frenchman slid into his spot. Now Casemiro is reportedly heading to Inter Miami after a solid but ultimately brief run in Manchester. The departure opens a hole in midfield that Michael Carrick’s squad needs to fill.

Romano made it clear there’s no doubt about United’s admiration for Tchouaméni. “They super-appreciate the player and they consider him perfect,” he said. But wanting a guy and getting him are two different things when the selling club isn’t talking and the wage structure won’t flex.

There is some intrigue here though. A report from The Peoples Person claims Real Madrid could actually push Tchouaméni out this summer even if he wants to stay. That would flip the dynamic completely. If Madrid decides to sell, the salary issue becomes the only real hurdle. And in a world where United have already shown willingness to spend on the right player, that hurdle might look smaller than it does right now.

For now, this one sits in a holding pattern. United are dreaming. Madrid isn’t budging. And the clock is ticking on a summer that could define how quickly Carrick’s squad gets back into the Champions League conversation.
