Manchester United quietly flipped the script on their summer window this week by triggering Youri Tielemans’ release clause at Aston Villa. Nobody saw it coming. Not the Villa fans. Not the pundits. Maybe not even Tielemans himself, judging by how fast it all went down.
The Belgian international signed his deal with his family right there beside him. His wife. His three kids. And if you’ve ever wondered why he makes that heart shape with his hands every time he scores, the answer is basically those four people.
Why He Does the Heart Thing
In his first sit-down with United’s official site, Tielemans didn’t dance around it. He said the celebration is “mainly for my family. They’re always there everywhere to support me, so I’m grateful to have them by my side. That’s a small gesture that I can give back to them.”
He’s 29 now. Three young kids. A wife who’s been through the Leicester title run, the Villa stint, and now the United move. When he’s not on the pitch or in training, he says he just wants to be home. “The main thing I do (away from football) is spending time with them. I just try to switch off when I’m at home and be the best dad I can be.”
That’s the whole thing. No deeper mystery. No hidden meaning. Just a guy who travels for work and wants his family to know they’re the reason he does it.
Jonny Evans Helped Sell Him
Tielemans also gave a shoutout to his old Leicester teammate Jonny Evans, who’s now working as a first-team coach under Michael Carrick. Evans was apparently a big part of the recruitment pitch. That makes sense. Tielemans and Evans shared a dressing room during Leicester’s 2021 FA Cup win, and there’s a level of trust there that a phone call from a random exec doesn’t replace.
He’s also made it clear he wants to play for Carrick. That’s not just media training either. The Belgian has spoken before about how much he respects Carrick’s approach as a midfielder-turned-manager who understands the technical side of the game.
The Goals Thing
Tielemans doesn’t score a ton. But when he does, it’s usually from 25 yards with the outside of his boot. He hit two for Belgium in that wild World Cup comeback against Senegal. He’s got that instinct for the spectacular.
But he also said he doesn’t care how they go in at United. “A tap-in is as good as a worldie,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to showing my game, to show what I’m about and to have a good run with the team.”
That’s probably the most encouraging thing United fans could hear from a new signing. He’s not here to be the hero. He’s here to fit in, play his game, and let the highlights happen naturally.
