Chelsea’s preseason is already underway in Sydney, but the head coach isn’t waiting around for his star players to show up. Xabi Alonso made that crystal clear Monday when he addressed the media ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers.
The Blues flew out to Australia with a 28-man squad, but a handful of key names are still on vacation after deep runs in the 2026 World Cup. Mike Penders, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, Malo Gusto, Moises Caicedo, Morgan Rogers, Enzo Fernandez and Pedro Neto all reached at least the knockout stage. Some of them went even further. James, Chalobah, Gusto and Rogers played in the bronze medal match. Fernandez went all the way to the final with Argentina, losing to Spain on July 19.
Alonso isn’t in the mood to give them a slow ramp-up period. When a reporter asked whether the record signing Rogers would be match-fit by the Premier League opener against Fulham on August 24, Alonso didn’t hedge.
“Yes. All the ones who come later, because they reached the final stages of the World Cup, they will be ready. We have a few of them, so they have to be ready,” Alonso said.
That’s a pretty clear message. The 24-year-old Rogers arrived from Aston Villa this summer for £117 million — the most Chelsea have ever paid for a single player. He’s expected to slot right into the attack alongside Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro. But there’s a difference between being on the plane and being sharp enough to start in a league game. Alonso is essentially telling him and the rest of the late arrivals: figure it out fast.
Chelsea’s schedule after Australia includes a stop in Asia and a final warm-up match against Real Sociedad back in London on August 15. The World Cup stragglers will trickle in as their breaks end, but they won’t have much time to get up to speed before the real games start.
More moves coming before the window closes
Alonso is also bracing for a busy few weeks on the transfer front. Chelsea has reportedly reached a £52 million agreement with Crystal Palace for center-back Maxence Lacroix, and that deal is expected to be finalized soon. But bringing people in means moving others out.
Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile were left off the preseason tour entirely, and sources indicate both are likely to leave before the transfer window shuts. Alonso acknowledged the roster is still in flux.
“We need to know that probably there will still be some movements,” he said. “We need to be flexible and quick to act. The main thing is that we have a clear idea, a clear plan that we have built. Probably it will change until the last day of the market being open.”
For now, Alonso is working with the group he actually has in Sydney. But the subtext is hard to miss: the World Cup stars are on the clock, and the coach expects them to arrive ready to compete, not just ready to report.
