Wisconsin Snags 2027 Edge Rusher From Texas Tech Amid Sorsby Fallout

The Wisconsin Badgers haven’t had much to celebrate on the field lately, but on Tuesday, Luke Fickell’s program scored a recruiting win that could pay dividends down the road.

Brody Pfannenstiel, a 2027 edge rusher from Kansas, flipped his commitment from Texas Tech to Wisconsin, per Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports. It’s the kind of get that doesn’t make national headlines on its own — a three-star prospect, ranked No. 55 among edge rushers in his class — but for a Badgers roster that’s been stripped of defensive talent in recent years, Pfannenstiel represents a building block.

“He’s an intriguing edge rusher recruit in the class of 2027 who should step in and contribute on a barren Wisconsin roster early in his career,” one recruiting analyst noted.

Timing Is Everything

The flip comes just one day after Texas Tech and quarterback Brendan Sorsby mutually parted ways, ending a messy saga that had dragged the Red Raiders through negative press. Sorsby, who had previously been granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA to play this fall despite gambling on college football games, saw that legal battle spiral into a public relations headache for the program. According to reports, a heap of legal action and mounting bad press led both sides to cut ties. Sorsby is now expected to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft this summer.

Whether the Sorsby drama directly influenced Pfannenstiel’s decision is unclear — and it’s more than likely a coincidence, according to sources familiar with the recruitment. But the timing certainly doesn’t help Texas Tech’s reputation right now.

What Pfannenstiel Brings to Madison

Pfannenstiel is ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect in the state of Kansas, per On3 Sports and Rivals. Even in a 2027 class that won’t arrive on campus until 2027, he’s being viewed as a potential early contributor given the Badgers’ current lack of depth at edge rusher.

Wisconsin’s defense has fallen off dramatically since its heyday under the previous staff. Fickell and his team are in the middle of a long-term rebuild, and this flip gives them a young piece to mold. “They’re trying to build out a deep roster in the future as they try to climb back up the Big Ten hierarchy,” one analyst said.

Expectations in Madison are low for the upcoming season, but moves like this offer a glimmer of hope. If Pfannenstiel develops as projected, he could be part of the foundation that helps restore Wisconsin to its former status as one of the Big Ten’s better programs.

For now, the Badgers will take the recruiting win — and hope more follow.
