For years, the Minnesota Wild have had wingers and defensemen coming out of their ears. What they haven’t had is a reliable top-six center not named Joel Eriksson Ek. And when Eriksson Ek went down during the 2026 playoffs, Ryan Hartman had to step into a role he was never built for. It didn’t go great.
So now general manager Bill Guerin is getting aggressive. Like, trade-your-best-prospect aggressive.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Guerin has been shopping young center Danila Yurov as the centerpiece of a package aimed at upgrading down the middle. Yurov, a first-round pick in 2022, just finished his first North American season with 27 points in 73 games. Not flashy numbers, but the kid has been considered one of the Wild’s most promising assets for a while. That he’s on the table tells you everything about how badly Minnesota wants to fix this problem.
The Wild have about $9.4 million in cap space and are willing to toss in future first-round picks to get a deal done. This is not a team window-shopping. They’re trying to buy.
What the Wild Are Looking At
One name they’ve already kicked the tires on: Vincent Trocheck of the New York Rangers. Guerin reportedly offered a first-round pick for Trocheck during the season, but Rangers GM Chris Drury said no thanks. That door might still be open, or it might be closed. Hard to say.
The bigger fish might be Dylan Larkin. The Detroit Red Wings captain requested a trade recently, and Minnesota is believed to be on his list of preferred destinations. Talks between the Wild and Wings are reportedly still happening. Larkin would slot in as the No. 1 center immediately and change the whole look of that forward group. He’s a Michigan kid, which doesn’t hurt either.
The Wild also made a run at Brady Tkachuk before Ottawa dealt him to Florida over the weekend. The Athletic’s Michael Russo called Minnesota’s offer “huge.” Didn’t matter. Tkachuk is a Panther now, and the Wild have to move on.
Why Now?
This isn’t just about one injury or one playoff loss. The Wild have needed a center for what feels like a decade. They finally won a playoff series last spring for the first time in ten years. They added Quinn Hughes. They’re in win-now mode. You don’t trade a prospect like Yurov for anything less than that.
Whether it ends up being Larkin, Trocheck or somebody else entirely, the message is clear: Guerin is tired of waiting. And he’s willing to pay the price to stop.
