The transfer window is winding down and there’s still this nervous energy hanging over most of the Premier League. Some teams have done real business. Others are just kind of standing there, hoping something falls into their lap. So here’s the honest breakdown of what each club actually needs right now, not the polished PR version.
Arsenal need a left winger who can actually score
Gabriel Martinelli managed one Premier League goal last season. One. They brought in Christos Tzolis from the Belgian league and Mikel Arteta says he believes in him. That’s nice. But Arsenal won the league last year and their attack still feels incomplete. The Vinicius Junior rumors are fun but probably just his camp using Arsenal’s name as leverage while Real Madrid works out a new deal. Even if that doesn’t happen, they need someone who scares defenders. Nico Williams is on the list but his injury history is real. Rafael Leao doesn’t track back enough for Arteta. It’s a genuine problem and the clock is ticking.
Chelsea just keep stacking problems on top of other problems
They overpaid for Morgan Rogers, which annoyed Arsenal and now leaves Aston Villa scrambling. Maxence Lacroix is a smart fit for Xabi Alonso’s back three system. But then you look at goalkeeper and it’s still a mess. Mike Penders is talented but Alonso clearly wants experience. They brought in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck. That’s not a joke. So why not go get a real keeper? They passed on Mike Maignan last summer and that decision looks worse by the day.
Brighton lost Welbeck and now what
Danny Welbeck going to Chelsea actually hurts Brighton more than people realize. He was their most reliable striker. Georginio Rutter isn’t really a pure nine. Evan Ferguson’s development stalled badly. Charalampos Kostoulas is 19. Stefanos Tzimas tore his ACL in December. They need a grown-up who can start tomorrow, not a project.
Newcastle have money but also problems
Losing Sandro Tonali to Tottenham stung. Losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer was worse. They’ve generated around £170 million in sales this window and brought in Bazoumana Toure and some young midfielders. But Bruno Guimaraes wants out and wants Arsenal. That leaves a hole in midfield that two teenagers can’t fill. They need a real defensive midfielder with some bite. Adam Wharton or Angelo Stiller would cost a lot but so did selling everyone worth keeping.
Tottenham finally spending but maybe on the wrong stuff
They dropped £230 million on Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke. Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson came in on frees. That’s a lot of money on midfielders and defenders when their attack still revolves around Richarlison and Dominic Solanke, who cannot stay healthy at the same time. Savinho wants to come from Manchester City and that would help. But they still need a real center forward. Eli Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth would be a statement. Feels like they’re building a nice car and forgetting the engine.
Liverpool have to replace Salah for real this time
Mohamed Salah had a down year and Victor Munoz is already in to help. But Liverpool need someone who is already elite, not just promising. Bradley Barcola looks likely at £125 million plus. He mostly plays left wing though. Rio Ngumoha might be their best option on the left and that’s both funny and kind of scary. The right side is wide open and they need a real answer.
Manchester City and United both need right backs
It’s weird that both Manchester clubs have the same problem. Matheus Nunes has been good at right back for City but Enzo Maresca probably wants someone who actually plays there. Tino Livramento has been linked but his injury history scared off three big clubs already. United have Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui who are fine but not long-term answers. Michael Carrick sorted midfield by bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Right back is the next thing. Luke Shaw has been playing well so left back is less urgent but they could still use someone there long term.
Sunderland and the creativity problem
They finished strong last season but took only 396 shots in the Premier League, fewest among teams that stayed up. Enzo Le Fee created 53 chances, 19 more than anyone else on the team. That’s not sustainable. They added Thomas Meunier on a free and that’s it. Europa League is coming and they need someone who can actually unlock a defense.
Every club has a hole somewhere. Some are just more obvious than others. The window isn’t closed yet but it’s getting close.
