The New York Mets aren’t actively shopping Francisco Lindor, but they aren’t hanging up the phone either. And because the Mets are listening, the rumors are flying. One of the loudest whispers: Could Cleveland bring back its former superstar shortstop?
The short answer is no. Hard no. Let’s be blunt about why.
Lindor was great in Cleveland. Four straight All-Star appearances from 2016 to 2019. Two Gold Gloves. A switch-hitter who helped drag that team to the World Series in 2016. Those were good years, and fans remember them fondly. But nostalgia isn’t a trade strategy.
This season, Lindor is hitting .210 with a .291 on-base percentage and a .363 slugging percentage. He’s been hurt. He’s under contract through 2031 at more than $32 million per year. The Guardians are a small-market team that doesn’t eat bad contracts for breakfast. Taking on that money for a 32-year-old who’s showing clear signs of decline? That’s a bet Vegas wouldn’t touch.
Then there’s the roster problem. Brayan Rocchio has become a legit shortstop. He’s been reliable with the glove and surprising at the plate. Some people think he got snubbed for the All-Star team this year. If Lindor showed up, where does Rocchio go? He’s not sliding over to second because Travis Bazzana, the No. 1 overall pick in 2024, is already the future there. Third base belongs to Jose Ramirez, who’s still a superstar. So Rocchio becomes a backup? A trade chip? That’s not how you build a young, cohesive team.
Look, it would be fun to see Lindor back in a Guardians uniform. The ovation would be loud. The jerseys would sell. But fun doesn’t win games. And right now, bringing Lindor back would mess with the chemistry, the payroll, and the development of a guy like Rocchio.
The Mets might move him. But Cleveland should not be the one picking up the phone.
